Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Alexander Reid Young was the son of Chrisopher Reid Young, who had married twice. His half-brother, 1775 James Henry Young, 18th Battalion, had already been killed in action, Pozieres, 29 July 1916, when Alex lost his life at Bullecourt.

Alex was educated at St. Stanislaus' College, Bathurst. It was reported in the Mudgee newspaper ‘He had a wide circle of friends in Mudgee, Gulgong district, and was liked by everyone who knew him. This young soldier was a well-known crack rifle shot in the western districts of New South Wales. Prior to enlisting, he was a traveller for the International Harvester Company, in the western districts. Mr. Young, senior, was well known in Gulgong and Mudgee. In the former town he was a leading storekeeper for many years including the period of the great gold rush there.’

Alex was reported by many to have been hit in the head by a machine gun bullet and killed instantly at Bullecourt on the 4 May 1917.

His dad died during 1917 and his sister Ernestine Josephine Young was the beneficiary of his will.
