H. E. ANDERSON enlisted in February and embarked as Gunner in 1st F.A. Brigade Reinforcements on 1st August 1916. He arrived in
France in January 1917, and was thereupon transferred to 105th Howitzer Battery 5th F.A. Brigade.
He took part in the evacuation by the Germans of the Somme area at the beginning of 1917, in the Battles of Lagnicourt in April, Bullecourt in May, and subsequent actions on that front, also the Battles of Menin Road and Polygon Wood in the Ypres offensive.
On 25th September 1917 at Polygon Wood he was gassed and went to hospital until January 1918.
He was then invalided to Australia, where he arrived at the end of June and was discharged on 19th July 1918.
