James Aloysius Gorman was born on 4 December 1879 in Dublin, Ireland, to Patrick John Gorman and Mary Lucy Gorman (née Dorris). In 1903, he married Catherine May O’Connor (1886–1953) in Brisbane, and together they had eleven children.
James enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Brisbane in August 1915, aged 35, stating his occupation as watchman/linesman and naming his wife Catherine as his next of kin. On 3 January 1916, he embarked for overseas service from Brisbane aboard HMAT Kyarra (A55) with the 5th Light Horse Regiment, 13th Reinforcements.
He was transferred to the 2nd Light Horse Reserve Regiment on 1 March 1916, and later that month was taken on strength of the 13th Field Artillery Brigade from the 5th Australian Light Horse and posted to the 51st Battery. He was mustered as Driver on 22 April 1916, and on 27 October 1916 was remustered as Gunner in the field.
Gorman was admitted to hospital several times suffering from influenza — first on 5 December 1916, and again on 21 December 1916, when he was admitted to the 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth. He was evacuated from Calais to England per H.S. Cambria and re-admitted to hospital on arrival. He was hospitalised once more on 13 January 1917 for influenza.
Gunner James Aloysius Gorman was discharged from the AIF on 25 August 1917 from the 1st Military District, having returned to Australia aboard the Ayrshire, suffering from myalgia and senility. He had sailed from Devonport, England, on 23 May 1917 aboard the Ayrshire for return to Australia.
Following his return, he lived in Windsor, Brisbane, and resumed work as a linesman.
Gunner James Aloysius Gorman died on 11 April 1951, aged 71, from heart disease and bronchitis, and was buried in Monumental Portion 5, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane. His wife Catherine died in July 1953 and was buried with her husband.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity has now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
