Kemp George 820 3rd Pioneer Battalion, C Company

George Kemp was born abt. 1884 at Berry, NSW the 7th of 8 children of Charles & Elizabeth Kemp. By the time George was in his 20’s he was living at Wooroolin near Kingaroy and working as a labourer per the 1913 Qld electoral Roll.
George played in the Wooroolin Brass band along with 6 other men honoured on the Wooroolin WW1 Honour Board. I have a photo taken about 1914, courtesy of my Grandmother, of the Brass Band that included George Kemp.
George Kemp was 30 years old when he travelled from Wooroolin to Brisbane to enlist on 14 Feb 1916. He stood 5 feet 5½ in his socks and had a medium complexion with brown hair and blue eyes. His distinguishing feature was a scar on the right side of his lip.
George was assigned to 3rd Pioneer Battalion, C Company. Once trained, Kemp was shipped to France via Cape Town in South Africa. On 24th February 1918, he was sent to hospital whilst on leave in England and later discharged in May of the same year. George suffered from Trench Fever/Trench Nephritis like so many others during WW1.
He was returned to his unit, and returned to Australia on the HT Ulysses on 18th January 1919.
George Kemp lived in the Landsborough district and was a fruit grower. He retired to Beach Parade Maroochydore, but died at the Repatriation Hospital, Greenslopes, on 5th August, 1955. He was buried in the Military Section of Woombye Cemetery.
George in included in the Genealogy Sunshine Coast publication “AND THEIR NAMES SHALL LIVE FOREVER…” REMEMBERING MILITARY PERSONNEL IN THE OLD MAROOCHY SHIRE CEMETERIES – BOOK 1, WOOMBYE
