Harry Garlick Grant
Harry Grant was born and raised in Kyneton Victoria in 1890, the son of John Erskine Grant and Louisa Garlick. Harry was a Stone Mason by trade, when he enlisted on 11th February 1915 at Kyneton. He never married.
Harry’s first service was at Gallipoli in 1915. He was sent from the battlefield to various hospitals in Malta and Egypt, then on to France where he joined the 8th Field Company Engineers. After service in France and further admissions to hospital Harry’s family were advised that he would be returning to Australia. Unfortunately, Harry was returned to the 8th Engineers in Belgium on 24th October 1917 where a fierce battle was in progress.
Sapper Harry Grant (“Shaver”) was killed in action on 27th October 1917 in Belgium at the age of 27, leaving only his parents and siblings - Andrew Alexander Garlick (On Active Service), Jack Grant and Maggie Grant, his younger brother Malcom having died in infancy.
Harry Garlick Grant is buried in the Menin Road South Military Cemetery.
