Albert Francis Haley was born on a Saturday on the 14th of January 1888, and lived on Elizabeth Street, Adelaide. Before enlisting in the Army Albert was a coach painter. He had no previous military service with the Australian Imperial forces. The only information about his family was that his mother's name was Eliza Haley, and their family home was on Elizabeth Street, Adelaide.
Albert enlisted to join the Australian army on the 2nd of February 1915 on a Tuesday at Keswick, Adelaide, at the age of 28. He embarked from Adelaide on the 31st of May 1915 on board HMAT A2 Geelong. Albert stayed with the 27th Battalion throughout the whole war. He fought at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. He was wounded in action twice. On the 31st of June 1916 when Private Haley was first wounded, he was hit by shrapnel from heavy shelling. On the 8th of May 1917, Private Haley sprained his ankle. Private Haley was wounded in action for the second time on the 20th of September 1917 around Westhoek, Belgium after advancing from Ypres. Albert returned home to Adelaide on the 28th of March 1919.
After the war, he returned to his job as a coach painter. There is not a lot of information about his community or family, but it is known he was of Irish or English origin. He would later die on the 19th of March 1960 on a Saturday. He was issued with the 1914/15 star, the British war medal, and the Victory medal.
