Francis Joseph (Joe) Foley enlisted in the AIF at Melbourne on 24 January 1916.
He left Australia on 29 March 1916 and arrived in England about six weeks later. After a period of training, he left England and arrived in France on 6 September 1916, where he joined the 22nd Battalion on 20 September 1916.
The northern winter of 1916 – 1917 was one of the worst on record and he endured many weeks in and out of the front line during those winter months in France.
His first major battle was also his last, and he was killed in action during the 2nd Division’s attack on Bullecourt on 3 May 1917.
Private Foley was originally reported missing, along with many others, however his remains were subsequently recovered and identified after the war.
He was later re-interred in the Queant Road Cemetery at Buissy, France in 1920.
