Biography contributed by Michael Silver

The youngest of three brothers who served with the AIF in the Great War, Allan Hammond was just nineteen when he signed up at Perth in June 1915.

He left for the war zone in September 1915 with the 3rd reinforcement of the 28th Battalion. In early October he landed at Gallipoli and shortly after was promoted to Corporal. Due to the extremely cold winter at Gallipoli he was returned to Egypt for medical treatment in mid-December suffering from fever and frost bite, shortly before the total evacuation of the peninsula.

In late May 1916 he was transferred with his 28th Battalion comrades to France and the killing fields of the Western Front. Shortly after arrival Corporal Hammond was promoted to Acing Sergeant.

The War Diary of the 28th records that on August 27, 1916, 'the battalion relieved the 15th Battalion in trenches north west of Pozieres. Except for heavy and contiuous artillery fire the period of occupation was uneventful".

Uneventful it may have been, except for Acting Sergeant Allan Portsmouth Hammond who was killed under the unrelenting and pulverising barrage of shells. His body was never found.

His brothers, Lieutant Leslie Hammond and 288 Private Walter Hammond both survived the war but were severely wounded, suffering injuries that would endure for the rest of their lives.
