Trooper William Stephens Howell (Service No:2521) enlisted in the AIF on 3 July 1916, and was attached to 13th Light Horse Regiment on 21 November 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Southampton on board HMAT A71 Nestor. Trooper Howell served on the Western Front -'He was among the Australians who barred the way of the Germans to Amiens, and he afterwards participated in the big push that gradually forced the Germans eastwards, and finally led to the signing of the armistace. Prior to returning home, Trooper Howell was very ill with pneonomonic influenza, and in a soldier's term 'nearly went west' (Geelong Advertiser; 16 April 1919). Trooper Howell embarked from England for Melbourne on 9 February 1919 on board HT Ascanius, and was attached to 13th Light Horse Regiment at Discharge on 26 April 1919.
