William was the fourth of eight children of Colin Campbell (born 1855 in Scotland) and Catherine Wilson (born 1861 in Ireland). Colin and Catherine married in Maryborough, QLD in 1886 and raised their family in Cordalba, Childers where Colin was Overseer at Knockroe Plantation.

William was a Labourer at Knockroe when he enlisted in the AIF in January 1915. He served with 6th Reinforcements 2nd Light Horse as a Private (Service No: 1013) in Egypt, the Sinai, Palestine and Turkey and was Discharged in 1919.

Brother Colin (Service No: 2609) served in WWI and brother Charles (Service No: Q219827) served in WWII.

William returned to Crdalba and worked as a Labourer. In 1921 younger brother Norman was killed in a work accident at the Mulgrave Central Sugar Mill in Gordonvale, QLD.

In 1923 William married Edith Emma Gardner (born 1903 in Surrey in England) in Childers, QLD. William and Edith settled in Cordalba, Childers in QLD where William worked as a Labourer, and later a Cane Farmer until his death in 1984. Edith died in 1974
