Biography contributed by Sharyn Roberts

WILLIAM RUPERT HOARE who was killed in action in France on 25th July 1916 was the son of Mr. W. T. Hoare. He was born in 1891 and was at the School from 1904 to 1906.

He was a farmer at Apsley when he enlisted in August 1915, and was in camp at Castleinaine until he left for Egypt on 29th December as a member of the 5th Battalion.

He went to France in March and was reported missing on 25th July 1916. Subsequently it was ascertained that he had been killed by a stray bullet while entering a communication trench about half a mile from the front trenches at Pozieres Wood. Chaplain Redmond, a friend, wrote : "I have met Captain Carter, and Rupert was in his platoon, machine guns, in the Pozieres battle of July last year. He knew Rupert, and speaks highly of him as a soldier."

He was buried in a little cemetery about quarter of a mile from Pozieres Wood.
