Son of William Henry and Isabella Powell of Boyd Street, Tweed Heads, NSW; brother of Ernest Powell who returned to Australia on 25 July 1918 having served with the 5th Light Horse Regiment and Charles Frederick Powel who returned to Australia on 16 March 1919 having served with the 11th Light Horse Regiment
