SMITH—On 10th June, 1918, somewhere in France, No. 5195, Pte. Joseph William Smith, 6th Battalion, dearly loved only brother of Mrs. J. Dunner, and brother-in-law of Jim, Boort; late of Warrnambool, after 3 years active service, aged 21 years.
Until we meet again before His throne,
Clothed in the spotless robes He gives His own;
Until we know as we are known
Good-night, Good-night, Good-night.
—(Inserted by his sorrowing friend, Mr. and Mrs.H. Dunner).
Biography
Joseph was the fourth child, and only son, of William and Caroline (nee Davey) SMITH. It appears that he was estranged from his widower father at the time of his enlistment as he gives his sister, Florrie, as his next of kin. It was Florrie who accepted his Service medals, Memorial Certificate and plaque.
