Biography contributed by Brandon Kratzer

Herbert Allen Bott was born on 10 April 1888 in Adelaide, South Australia. His family was his father F Bott with his mother and sibling’s unknown. He was also married to Shirley H Bott with their son, Irving Bott. His religion was from the Church of England.

He had worked as a labourer and then on 24 August 1914, he enlisted in the 10th Battalion, E Company under the regimental number of 418 and the rank of Private. After enlisting in the AIF, he had embarked from Adelaide, SA onboard the ‘Transport A11 Ascanius’ for Active Service abroad straight after and to join MKF Gallipoli a year later. He was admitted into a Staty Hospital in Gallipoli and discharged a while later (4 months) to Base. He had gone through Weymouth, France and a Machine Gun School all in the period of a year and got dispatched to England P.B a year later. He had returned to France from Weymouth to return to Australia 2 months later.

When he arrived back on 12 February 1918, he was admitted into the AIF’s Medically Unfit/Disability ward for 2 months. He was discharged on 5 April 1918 with a document to say he was discharged. On the day we call Remembrance Day, 11th November 1918, 7 months after Herbert was discharged from the AIF, at the time of 11am, the Germans had signed an agreement to peace which had been prepared by the British and the French.

Life after the war brought Herbert a lot. He had got married to Shirley H Bott, and had gave birth to Irving Bott. Herbert died at Hilton, SA on 4 January 1932. His gravestone is laid at the AIF Cemetery, West Terrace, Adelaide.
