Ernest was the seventh of nine children of Thomas Loch (born 1845 in Tamworth, NSW) and Annie Smith (born 1855 in Wiltshire, England). Thomas (a Farmer) married Annie in 1872 at Tamworth in NSW. Thomas and Annie lived at Murrurundi and Gunnedah where Thoams was a Farmer. He was ploughing his fields in 1914 when he died. Annie died in 1940.
Ernest had worked as a Mail Driver at Spring Ridge, Liverpool, NSW was a Farmer when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1916. The Northern Star reports on 5 October 1916, that Ernest was given a send off and presented with a gold watch inscribed by the Newrybar War Service Committe and wished 'God Speed'. Miss Ethel McKnight 'was called on to fasten a handsome gold wristlet watch on Mr Loch's arm'. Ermest was a Private (Service No:607) with 11th and 13th Machine Gun Coys, and was WIA in two occasions in France - severe Mustard Gas Poisoning, and a Bullet Wound to his head. Ernest was Discharged in July 1919.
Returning to Tamworth, NSW, Ernest was a Farmer when he married Ethel Anne McKnight (born 1896 at Bruthen in Victoria) at Glenn Innes, NSW in 1920. Ernest and Ethel lived briefly at Tweed Heads, NSW where Ernest was a Farmer, before relocating to Brisbane, QLD where Ernest worlked as a Milk Vendor.
In 1930 the family moved back to NSW, living at Kempsey where Ernest worked as a Vulcaniser (Tyre Retreader) until 1936 when they moved to Bondi in Sydney. Ernest was working as a Salesman when he died in 1941. Ethel died in 1974.
