VALEDICTORY
On Friday, 30th June, Captain Geoff M. Deans, who for the past 9 years has been associated with the firm of Messrs J. W. Trumble and Palmer, solicitors, Nhill, received a communication from the military authorities stating that he had been selected to attend the Officers' School at Duntroon, Federal Territory.
Captain Deans was admitted to practice as a solicitor at the Victoria bar three years ago, and frequently conducted cases on behalf of the firm at the local court, while he has also transacted Messrs Trumble and Palmer's professional business at Kaniva, which town he has regularly visited.
During his stay in Nhill he made a very large circle of friends, who will regret his departure from the town, but at the same time they will be pleased to learn that he is one of the officers selected to complete his military training, before proceeding to the front to fight for his King and country.
Captain Deans was one of the best all round athletes in the district, and was undoubtedly the most , consistent player of the local cricket club during recent years. Three years ago, in partnership with Mr N. Corke (now Sergeant Corke) they won the Wimmera district doubles championship at the tennis tournament held at Murtoa; he was also a prominent player of the local football and golf clubs. His quiet unassuming demeanour made him a general favourite in the town, and he will be greatly missed in social circles.
Captain Deans left Nhill by the "up" express on Tuesday, 4th July, in order to catch the special train
which was to convey 115 other candidates to Duntroon. He will return to Nhill before finally, leaving Australia on active service.—" Nhill Free Press."
