Joseph was the sixth of ten children of Ephraim Mayman (b1845 in Lancashire, England) and Emma Phyllis Russell (b1855 in Edara, Victoria). Ephraim was eleven years of age in 1857 when he arrived in Melbourne Victoria on board the Herald of the Morning. The family moved to Maryborough in Victoria where they established Mayfield Farm. Ephraim was a Farmer when he married Emma in 1878, and he and his wife settled in Mernda before moving to Melbourne.
Joseph was a Coach Painter (Enameller) in Melbourne when he enlisted in the AIF in November 1917. He served with 6th Training Squadron Australian Flying Corps (Private; Service No:2524) as an air Mechanic and was Discharged in 1919. Brother James Russell Mayman (Driver; Service No:31) was KiA in France.
Returning to Melbourne, Joseph was working as a Coach Painter in 1922 when he married Ethel Myra Daisy Leahy (b1903 in Leongatha, Victoria). Joseph and Ethel settled in melbourne, where Joseph worked as a Painter until his Death in 1972. Ethel relocated to Wangaratta, where she died in 1991.
