Henry joined the 27th Battalion and embarked the Commonwealth in Sydney on 19 September 1916, reaching Plymouth, England on 14 November. His unit went to France, where on 5 February 1917 he was promoted to Lance Corporal. Henry was severely wounded in the leg during action in France on 22 May 1918. The severity of his wound necessitated him being invalided to England for further treatment a week later. Henry left England on the Ascanius on 9 February, reaching Australia on 21 March and was discharged on 5 May.
