Great Sydney Central Station Honour Board

Reginald Charles BERGHOFF was born on 23 February 1894 at Randwick in Sydney and was educated at Petersham Public School. On 20 September 1909 he joined the NSWGR&T as an apprentice clerk at Sydney in the Traffic Audit Branch. On 1 February 1912 he was promoted to junior clerk and on 23 February 1915 he was promoted to clerk.
On 14 January 1916 he enlisted in the AIF using the name Charles Reginald Berghoff, with the rank of Private (Service Number 17218). He was posted to the 6th Reinforcements to the 2nd Division Artillery Corps. He nominated his father, Charles George Berghoff of the Livingstone Hotel, Petersham, as his next of kin.
He embarked aboard HMAT A69 ‘Warilda’ for England at Sydney on 22 May 1916. He disembarked at Plymouth, England on 18 July 1916 and went into training in England until he was transferred to the 21st Field Artillery Brigade, 116th Howitzer Battery on 26 October 1916. It was not until 20 March 1917 that he left England for France. On 30 March 1917 he was transferred to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 101st (Howitzer) Battery. On 29 July 1917 he was killed in action during the 3rd Battle of Ypres near Lake Zillebeke, which is south-east of Ypres in Belgium.
