Tom was the fourth of six children of Richard William Richards (born 1862 in Cornwall, England) and Ann Lomax (born 1861 in Lancashire, England). Richard was a Coal Miner and Ann was a Weaver when they married in Lancashire in 1882. Richard and Ann and their four children (including Tom) immigrated in December 1899, arriving in Brisbane, QLD on board the Duke of Argyll. They settled in Ipswich, QLD where Richard worked as a Coal Miner until his death in 1925.

Tom was a Coal Miner in Ipswich, QLD when he enlisted in the AIF in March 1916. He had served two years with the Senior Cadets and eighteen months in the Militia - 11th Infantry. Tom (Service No:1898) served with 42nd Infantry Battalion 2nd Reinforcements and was WiA in France on three occasions. He was Discharged in June 1920.

Returning to Ipswich, QLD Tom worked as a Coal Miner and in 1924 married Emiline Webster Mallet (born 1898 in Gympie, QLD). Emiline was living in Silkstone, Ipswich, QLD and working as a Dressmaker when she and Tom married. They settled in Ipswich and Tom worked as a Coal Miner until the mid 1930s when he became a Boot Repairer.

Tom died in 1949 and Emilene in 1985.
