James was born at Gin Gin (Ox Hill) Queensland. He enlisted with his brothers, Joshua and Ernest, and went to camp at the same time. All had consecutive regimental numbers in the 49th Battalion AIF. None returned to Australia, all losing their promising lives during the Great War.
He was a farmer and stockraiser, in company with his brothers, and had large holdings in the Gin Gin district. J. Edward Allen, like his brothers, was a very keen sport, a successful trainer of a very good local race horse. J. Edward was also a member of the Gin Gin Rifle Club, and won a gold medal during the year 1909. He also won several valuable trophies, scoring more than one possible at 500 yards. He was killed in action at Messines Ridge on the 7 June, 1917. Age 31 years.

Son of William and Sarah Jane Allen. Native of Gin Gin, Queensland. Brother of 2615 Pte Ernest ALLEN, 49th Bn, killed in action, 25 April 1918; 2614 Pte Josiah ALLEN, 49th Bn, killed in action, 7 June 1917.
