Son of Francis Walter Patrick Upton and Elizabeth Upton nee McAlpine of Ballarat Street, Collingwood, Victoria

20 October 1916 - enlisted at Seymour, Victory with the 23rd Battalion with the rank of Private.

15 March 1916 - transferred to the 60th Battalion

19 July 1916 - wounded in action. Embarked HS St. David on 21 July 1916 for England with wound to the leg 

7 July 1917 - transferred to the 1st Field Bakery

19 April 1919 - commenced return to Australia abord HT Sardinia disembarking on 8 June 1919

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

6 September 1919 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as medically unfit.

During 1923c Francis married Blanch Irene Donaldson in Victoria.
