Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

45 years ago today, on the 19th April 1977, Private Bert Coombes, 17th Battalion (Reg No-59121), labourer from Young Street, Carrington, New South Wales and New Lambton Estate, Adamstown, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 79. ANGLICAN 1-71. 117.

Born at Dungog, New South Wales as Bertie on the 25th March 1898 to William Walter and Eliza Coombes nee Elliott; husband of Hilda Gladys Coombes nee Hunter (married 1931, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1975, sleeping here), Bert enlisted May 1918 with the 11th N.S.W. Reinforcements at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Bert returned home fit and well on the 5th September 1919, being discharged on the 20th September 1919.

Mr. Coombes’s name has been inscribed on the Carrington Citizens' Memorial Gates (photos, unveiled on the 23rd February 1924, 258 names inscribed, 40 Fallen) and the Carrington Municipal District Roll of Honor.
