Ernest's parents were Thomas Philip Raymont and Eliza Hancox. He attended Humpybong State School in early life and enlisted in October 1915. At that time Ernest was farming at Woody Point. On his return from the war Ernest married Alice Henderson Christie in 1919. In October 1935 Ernest, who was treasurer of the Queensland branch of the Returned Soldiers' League, was appointed general secretary of the league in Australia, necessitating a move for the family to Victoria. Alice died in 1937 and Ernest then married Lily Frances Hawkes in 1938. The couple eventually retired to Southport.
