Private Ernest Crawford (Service No:3716) enlisted in the AIF on 15 July 1915 with 10th Battalion and was attached to 6th Battalion when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Suez on 23 November 1915 on board HMAT A40 Ceramic. On 21 June 1916 Private Crawford embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles, and was hospitalised with Influenza at Rouen. On 8 April 1919, Private Crawford embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Tresor Montes, and was attached to 5th Machine Gun Battalion at Discharge on 15 July 1919. Siblings Fred and Henry also served in WWI, and son Ernie served in the RAN in WWII.

Ernest was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1897, seventh of nine children of David Crawford (b1856 in Hobart, Tasmania) and Agnes Jane Ryall (b1863 in Melbourne, Victoria). David (a Carpenter) and Agnes married in 1884 in Melbourne, where they settled and raised their family and David worked as a Carpenter. Agnes died in 1911 and David in 1917.

Ernest was a Labourer in Melbourne prior to enlisting in the AIF. Following his Discharge, he was working as a Labourer in 1921 in Melbourne when he married Margaret May O'Shannessy (b1904 in Melbourne, Victoria). Ernest and Margaret settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Ernest was a Labourer. Ernest died in 1946 and Margaret in 1985.
