CHAPLAIN IN TWO WARS.
Rt. Rev. C. L. Riley's Career.
The Bishop of Bendigo (the Rt. Rev.C. L, Riley), who has been appointed Deputy-Assistant Chaplain-General, is a son of the late Archbishop Riley, who was Chaplain-General of the Australian Forces in the last war. He himself was a chaplain to the Australian Light Horse in Palestine for a year and a half. The Rt. Rev. C. L. Riley took holy orders in 1912 after studying at Caius College, Cambridge, and he served the church in this State from 1914 until his appointment as Bishop of Bendigo in May, 1938. At that time he was Archdeacon of Northam. He has to his credit more than 20 years of service with the military forces of the Empire, and when he became Bishop of Bendigo he was senior Anglican chaplain to the military forces in this State. He has been decorated with the Colonial Auxiliary Force officers' decoration and long service medal. He was senior vice-president of the Returned Soldiers' League in this State for over 10 years, and for many years took a prominent part in the Anzac Day commemoration services.
