On his Attestion paper he stated that he had no next of kin. A legal firm of Casterton, Victoria claimed on 29 August 1916 that he had two sisters Annie Mruphy of Colerine, Victoria and Bridget Murphy of Digby, Victoria. Further enquires were made from a James Walsh of Kellberrin who stated that he was John's brother
