Son of William John Howes and Margaret Howes of Redmond Street, Leichhardt, NSW.

Brother of William Henry Howes who killed in action on 9 October 1917 with the 17th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on Menin Gate, Ypress, Panel 17.

Arthur served his Baking apprenticeship with Abel & Co. of Newtown, NSW

Commenced return to Australia on 3 March 1916 aboard HT Argyllshire arriving at Melbourne on 30 March 1916 for onward travel to Sydney, NSW
