Biography contributed by Daryl Jones

MORETON, Cecil Knight (1895-1973)

Born in London on 21 July 1895, the son of Dr Frederick Moreton and his wife Mary nee Jarvie, of 'Meltham', Fyansford, he came to Australia with his parents as a young boy. He was enrolled at Geelong College from 1909 to 1912.

After the death of his brother, 'Bert' and against his father's wishes, he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corps (AFC) on 2 February 1917. He then embarked as 2nd Air Mechanic C K Moreton (1620) for England with the March 1917 Reinforcements on HMAT A74 Marathon on 10 May for training. He was promoted Lieutenant at 8th Training Squadron AFC, after training at Oxford as a Flying Officer Pilot. He eventually returned to Australia on HMT China, embarking on 1 May 1919.

The AWM Collection holds a group portrait of B Flight, No 8 Training Squadron of the AFC, Leighterton which includes 2nd Lt C K Moreton.

His three brothers, Archibald Herbert Moreton (1894-1915); Frederick Ewart Moreton (1892-1978); and Arthur Roberts Moreton (1901-1964) all attended Geelong College. Trooper Archibald Herbert Moreton was killed in action at The Nek on Gallipoli on 7 August 1915, and was buried at Ari Burnu Cemetery, Anzac
