Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Faulkner Borwick DSO enlisted in the  AIF on 17 August 1914 and embarked with 6th Infantry Battalion from Melbourne for Gallipoli on board HMAT Honorata on 19 October 1914. Lieutenant Borwick was WiA on the first occasion in May 1915 in the Dardanelles and in July 1916 at Pozieres. He was Mentioned in Dispatches twice, was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French Government for his courage under enemy fire during the Battle of the Somme (AWM) and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order 'for carrying out his duties in an most efficient manner as well as ensuring the success of two raids by the 33rd Battalion on the enemy' (AWM). He was a Lieutenant Colonel in 1919 when he attended  the Versailles Peace Confernece as a member of the Australian delegation, and was demobilised on 5 November 1919.

Born in 1890 in Melbourne Victoria, Thomas was the third of five children (two survived infancy) of Henry Barton Borwick Snr (b1848 in Oxfordshire, England) and Hannah Mary Watson (b1854 in Ballan, Victoria). Henry and Hannah married in 1885 in Melbourne, Victoria where they settled and raised their family and Henry was an Accountant.

Thomas was educated at Scotch College and Melbourne University (Mechanical Engineering) - and was a member of the Melbourne University Rifles. In his last year of studies when he enlisted in the AIF, he had been offered a position at Vickers Ltd in Cumberland, England.

In 1918 in Florence Italy, Thomas married Elsa Carolina Sara de Ambrosis (b1893 in Florence, Italy). In 1924 Thomas joined the Indian Ordnance Services and in 1941 was created a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE). In 1943 Thomas was appointed Director General of Indian Ordnance Factories and in 1946 was Knighted. Lady Elsa Borwick died in england in 1977 and Sir Thomas Borwick died in 1981 in England.
