A son of Mr and Mrs Chalkley, 39 Coronation street, West Footscray, enlisted in Western Australia early in 1915. Prior to being killed in action in France he had been wounded at Gallopili, in Egypt and in France. He was attached to the 8th Field Engineers, and was a married man. His wife received the following letter from the late Driver Chalkley's sergeant (H. Butson) regarding he husband's death: "Your husband died a brave soldier, doing his duty, and his end was painless, he being killed outright. . . We are burying him to-morrow and will erect a cross over his grave. He is to be laid at rest in a British soldier's cemetery at Ypres I will endeavor to send you a photo of his resting place. 'Jack' was liked and respected by all in the company, and I am sure you had a husband to be proud of. "
