The final resting place for; - 595 (should read 959) Private Frederick William McCaughey of Carlton and North Melbourne, Victoria had been employed as an electrician at the time of his enlistment for War Service on the 17th of August 1914 and was allocated to the 6th Battalion 1st AIF.

Frederick Embarked for Egypt and further training, departing from Melbourne on the 19th of October but was deemed sick shortly after his arrival and was evacuated to hospital at Mena on the 10th of November for hospitalization. Frederick was recorded as suffering phthisis and was returned to Australia for which he was embarked for on the 3rd of February 1915. On his arrival he was admitted into the Austin Hospital, Melbourne for further hospitalization, and following this he was to receive ongoing treatment at the Greenville Sanatorium until August where he was discharged for home treatment.

Frederick McCaughey received his official discharge from the 1st AIF as no longer fit for service on the 20th of January 1916, and after this his health further deteriorated. By April 1917 Frederick had been admitted into the 5th Australian General Hospital (Melbourne) and it was here where he finally succumbed to the effects of pulmonary tuberculosis and heart failure on the 21st of April.

Following his premature passing Private Frederick McCaughey was interred within Melbourne General Cemetery, Victoria.
