An Original Anzac who served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
77 years ago today, on the Saturday morning of the 28th December 1946, Gunner John Stephen Livermore, referred to as Jack, 2nd Australian Divisional Ammunition Column (Reg No-603), shoeing-smith or farrier and labourer from Cargo, New South Wales and 370 King Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and 71 Darby Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of three (Gladys, Joyce Evelyn, Gloria), late of Newcastle Fortress Command, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. CATHOLIC 2-51. 114.
Born at Cargo, New South Wales on the 26th September 1888 to Edward Joseph and Mary Livermore; husband of Ruby Evelyn Livermore nee Ryan (married 1920, Sydney, N.S.W., died 14.9.1978, Windale, N.S.W., age 74), Jack enlisted on the 1st December 1914 with the 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment at Abbassia, Cairo Governorate, Egypt.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A35 Berrima on the 19th December 1914.
Wounded in action - 12.11.1915 (GSW foot).
Admitted to hospital 26.5.1918 (otitis media - an infection of the middle ear).
Granted leave to Paris from 22.2.1918 to 4.3.1918.
Marched out to England on the 8.11.1918 (1914 Furlough).
Commenced return to Australia 14.12.1918.
Jack arrived home on the 29th January 1919 (1914-15 Leave), being discharged on the 31st March 1919.
Mr. Livermore’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Jack’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Service record states, Died after Discharge, 26/12/1946.
Also served 2nd A.I.F. - enlisted 29.6.1940, Newcastle, N.S.W., 2nd Garrison Battalion, N67942, discharged 6.2.1943.
