Pte J. S. Deam, eldest son of Mr and Mrs J. S. Deam, Francis street, Bairnsdale, died on the 15th August from wounds received in France a week before. He enlisted in July, 1915, and was promoted to the rank of corporal after being in camp for a time. He arrived in France in April last, where he was in hospital for a short period suffering from a poisoned foot. After he recovered, in order to be transferred with some comrades in the firing line he relinquished his position as corporal and he was not long in action before receiving a wound which proved fatal. He was a native of Bairnsdale and almost 24 years of age. He was a clerk, and for the past few years was an active member of the Bairnsdale Rowing Club. A younger brother, Pte. W. Deam, is in camp in training, preparatory to going to the front.
