Biography contributed by John Oakes

Wilfred George HARVEY (Service Number 6280) was born in Southampton, England, on 17th August 1879.  He joined the NSW Government Railways as a boilermakers’ helper at Eveleigh Workshops in 1912.  In April 1916 he enlisted in the AIF in Sydney. He gave his wife, Margarite, as his next of kin.

He embarked from Sydney in September 1916 on HMAT ‘Euripides’. He landed in England in October, was sent to France in December, and ‘taken on strength’ by the 2nd Battalion in January 1917.

He was wounded in action on 5 May 1917 (penetrating wounds of abdomen) and died at the 3rd Australian Casualty Clearing Station the same day.  He was buried in Grevillers British Cemetery, 1¼ miles W of Bapaume.

War pensions were granted to his widow and three children, Elizabeth Mary, John Wilfred and Margaret Mabel.
