He was the son of Caroline E.G. Lander and the late Henry Lander. He enlisted in the AIF on 12/7/1915 and embarked from Melbourne with the 9th Reinforcements on 8/2/1916 aboard HMAT "Warialda" (A69). After a brief stop in Egypt he arrived in France and joined the 22nd Battalion on 31/7/1916. In December 1916 he was taken ill and did not rejoin the battalion until 1/3/1917. He was aged 23 years.
