The Minmi Roll of Honour has 78 names inscribed of those who returned home from The Great War.

The 66th name inscribed is Sapper William John Muir.

Sapper William John Muir, 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-5788), colliery clerk, Minmi, N.S.W.  I could not definitely locate a date of death (possibly 31st August 1951), or place of burial or ashes interred for Mr. Muir, possibly in Newcastle Memorial Park? So any information would be greatly appreciated.

William Muir born at Newcastle, N.S.W. on the 14th January 1889 to William, died 15.4.1919, Drummoyne, N.S.W., age 61, buried at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., PRESBYTERIAN-13SE. 59A, from "Braeside", 7 Sydney Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, and Elizabeth Muir, died 4.7.1939, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 79, mother of 4, sleeping at Sandgate Cemetery, N.S.W., PRESBYTERIAN-13SE. 59A, from "Braeside", 7 Sydney Street, Newcastle, New South Wales and "Braeside", 47 Tyrrell Street, Newcastle, N.S.W.

William enlisted on the 6th April 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies Reinforcements, age 26 years 2 months, at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 25th October 1916.

Disembarked Plymouth, England 28.12.1916.

Proceeded O/Seas to France from Folkestone, England 28.1.1917.

Taken on Strength 3rd Australian Tunnelling Company 6.2.1917.

Proceeded on leave from 23.10.1918 to 11.11.1918.

Admitted to hospital 31.1.1919 (influenza).

Commenced return to Australia 1.7.1919.

William arrived home on the 20th August 1919, being discharged on the 28th September 1919.

Mr. Muir’s name has also been inscribed on the Cooks Hill Superior Public School Roll of Honour, Minmi St Andrew's Church Roll of Honour and the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Newcastle) Roll of Honour, unveiled on the 3rd April 1927, 78 names inscribed, 9 Fallen.
