John was the son of James and Sarah O’Leary [nee Hatch]. From 12 March to
16 July of 1916 James spent considerable time being treated in hospitals in
Egypt and France. He was admitted to hospital in Havre, France with
bronchitis on 29 November and rejoined his unit on 21 December. He was
appointed a Driver on 9 October 1917. John was treated for scabies in
England on 6 February 1918. He returned to Australia on the City of Exeter on
28 February 1919 and was discharged on 14 April.
