STANLEY GRANTHAM SMITH

Stanley Grantham Smith Reg. No 4518 was born in Altrincham, England. His next of kin was noted as Mrs. Agnes Smith of Hale, Chelsea, England. He was employed as a gardener at Orange Vale, Montacute, South Australia. An historic property originally granted to explorer Charles Sturt. It also was the place where John McDoull Stuart recuperated from his trip from the South to the North Coast of Australia. Private Stanley Grantham Smith was 26 years of age, when he embarked from Adelaide on the 25th of March 1916, as a member of the 27th Australian Infantry Brigade. He sailed on HMAT Shropshire A9. His death occurred on the first day of the Battle of Gueudecourt, on the 5th of November 1916. His last resting place is the AIF Burial Ground, known as Grass Lane, 2 klms north of Flers in France.
