KALGOORLIE MINER (WA 1995-1954) Thu 1 Aug 1935 Page 2 DEATH OF J. WORMALD- CORONER'S INQUIRY

DEATH RESULTED FROM MINE ACCIDENT

The circumstances attending the death of Joseph Edwin Wormald at the Kalgoorlie Government Hospital on July 18 last formed the subject of a coroner's inquiry in the Kalgoorlie Courthouse yesterday afternoon before the Acting Coroner Mr. J.W. Hawkins, J.P. and a jury of three. Wormald died from pneumonia, which the jury found was brought about by a fall sustained whilst the deceased was at work in a mine on the Santa Claus lease at Randall’s some days prior to his death. Yesterday Sergeant Gowie examined the witnesses

Mr. M. F. Geary represented the mining division of the Australian Workers' Union, and Mines Inspector Winzar and Workman's Inspector. Leahy was also present. Dr. B. S. P. Gillett stated in evidence that he attended Wormald at his home at Williamstown on July 12. The deceased complained of pains in the right side of the chest. Wormald looked very ill and he was removed to hospital suffering, from pneumonia and pleurisy.

Wormald had informed the doctor that he had fallen between five and seven feet in a mine somewhere on the transline. The man died on July 18. There were no external markings on the chest, but the pneumonia, and pleurisy were located on the side of the chest on which deceased had said that he had fallen. About 3 o'clock witnesses heard a rumble in the direction of where Wormald was working. On investigation they found Wormald at the bottom of the trench in a half sitting position. Questioned, the deceased had said after a time that he was in the act of putting up a stone from the trench when it slipped and rolled back again. In an attempt to jump clear, he had fallen on his side onto a pile of rocks.  Deceased had declined to take a rest, saying that he would be all right in a few minutes. He worked for the remainder of the shift, but the following day he was unable to work. He complained of pains on the right side of the chest. On July 12 they brought Wormald to his home by motor truck.  After a brief retirement the jury found that Wormald died in the Government Hospital on July 18 from pneumonia which, was brought about by deceased falling on a rocks in the Santa Claus mine on July 10.
