Son of Louis Montgomery De Valle and Mary R. De Valle nee Whitecross of Jika Jika, Victoria previously of Williamstown, Victoria. Brother of Louis Francis De Valle who returned to Australia on 12 February 1918 having served with the 39th Battalion.

Husband of Alice Gertrude De Valle nee Johnston of Gwynne Street, Richmond, Victoria. Alexander and Alice married during 1907c in Victoria.

Commenced return to Australia on 6 August 1918 aboard HT Malta disembarking on 28 September 1918
