William left Australia on the Miltiades and disembarked with the 10th Battalion at Suez on 11 March 1916, where he served until sent to France with the 10th Battalion on 11 June. William served the remainder of the war in France, returning to Australia on board the Commonwealth on 13 April 1919, disembarking on 6 June and was discharged on 21 July.
