Horace Edgar (Jim) Jeffs. Personal story

Before joining the West Australian 44th Battalion, Horace was a grocer in Perth with his brother James Maxwell Jeffs. Horace also helped to build the Trans Australian Railway just before joining the army in 1917.

Horace married Rhoda Mary Radley at St. Mary's Cathedral Perth West Australia on 6th September 1919. The couple had 4 children. James, Robert, Richard & Margaret. After being discharged from the army in 1920, Horace re-joined Commonwealth Railways and was posted to Port Augusta and Darwin as a storeman/supervisor. Horace resigned from the Railways in 1938 and moved his family to Adelaide where he opened a grocers shop at 42 Hill St. Parkside.

Horace passed away at Rose Park Hospital on 11th September 1944 at aged 65 years, and is buried in the A.I.F cemetery at West Terrace Adelaide.

GREAT WAR HISTORY

6/4/1917: Joined 44th Battalion, 11th Brigade in Kalgoorlie. Trained at Blackboy Hill, West Australia. Height 5'9"

24/7/1917: Embarked Albany West Australia on H.M.A.T. PORT OF MELBOURNE.

16/9/1917: Disembarked Liverpool, England.

8/1/1918: Proceed overseas to France. Embarked Southampton.

4/7/1918: Wounded, Battle of Hamel, gunshot wound left shoulder.

21/7/1918: Transferred to England.

22/7/1918: To Military Hospital Endall St. Holborn London

28/7/1918: Dangerously ill.

3/9/1918: Pronounced out of danger.

21/9/1918: Transferred from Military Hospital Endell St. London to Harefield Australian Military Hospital, Harefield Middlesex for convalesence.

16/3/1919: Returned to Australia on Duluce Castle

1/2/1921: Honourably discharged Perth, West Australia. Medically unfit.
