George left Australia on the Ascanius on 20 October 1914. He was shot in the
chest at Gallipoli on 16 August 1915, and evacuated to Harefield Hospital in
London on 11 September. Early 1916 he was serving in Egypt, where he was
transferred to the 4th Pioneer Battalion. He was made a Sergeant on 27 May.
George was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant while serving in France in
1917.Carter was awarded the Military Cross on 4 June 1918 and returned to
Australia on the Orsova and was discharged on 16 February 1920.
Carter’s Military Cross was awarded, “for unfailing and enthusiastic devotion
to duty during the period 22/9/17 to 24/2/18...especially during the latter part
of September and October 1917...in the neighbourhood of Zonnebeke
{Belgium}...under continuing and harassing enemy fire...Lieutenant Carter
showed out conspicuously among the platoon commanders.”{AWM Digitised
