Son of James Hogg and Clara Louise Hobb nee Dainty of 'Westborn', Newcastle Road, Congleton, Cheshire, England
Prior to migrating to Australia he had served in the Cheshire Light Infantry and the Cheshire Imperial Yeomanry
Commenced return to Australia on 3 March 1916 aboard SS Argyllshire
