James Gorse Howarth grew up in Bradford and Harrogate UK. His family were in woollen milling and at the time of WW1 his father owned a mill in Bradford.
He left for Australia in January 1914 aged 24. He travelled and worked in Queensland before enlisting in January 1916. At the time of enlistment he had been working as a stockman.
At the end of WW1 Lt. James Howarth requested that he be demobilised back to England rather than to Australia, stating that he was required to help manage the family business.
James Howarth married Lillian Oliver in June 1919 and they had two sons. Both sons ended up emigrating - one to Canada and the other Australia.
