Son of Albert William and Emily Mary PEARSE
MAURICE WILLIAM PEARSE who died of wounds in France on 16th August 1918 was the son of Mr. A. W. Pearse. He was born in 1895 and was at the Preparatory School in 1909 and left to enter the Armidale School, New South Wales. He enlisted early in 1915 and sailed with reinforcements for the 1st Battalion in July of that year. He saw active service in Egypt, Gallipoli and France with the 53rd Battalion and was wounded at Pozieres in 1916. He was made Quartermaster of the 6th Division, and when it was broken up went back as Sergeant to his battalion.
A letter from the Lieutenant of his company states that he and others were swimming near the village of Morcourt, when a stray shell fell amongst the party, killing and wounding the greater number of them. In the last action Sergeant Pearse was concerned with he performed admirably and most bravely, and earned the commendation of all who saw him.
