Brothers: 2777 Pte John Ernest SHEPHARD, 60th Battalion died of illness, 12 July 1916; 2778 Pte Thomas Henry Phillip SHEPHARD, 60th Battalion killed in action, 19 July 1916. The three brothers all joined 60th Battalion. George Arnold and Thomas Henry were both killed in action at Fleurbaix on the same day, John dying one week before.

George attended State School, George St., Fitzroy. A blacksmith, 26 years old at time of death. 

A Witness 2764 Pte.S.Ronald D Coy 60th Bn stated “he was shot in the arm first, and then in the side and back as he lay alongside. Died on the ground 19th July. Still lying there on the 21st July.”

He was posted as missing until a Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. His remains were never found.
