Biography contributed by Adelaide Botanic High School

Arthur Powell (1895 - 1943)

Arthur Powell was born in Robe, South Australia in 1895.
He grew up in Robe and later lived in Marryatville before at the age of 21 he enlisted to fight in WW1. He served for Australia as a part of the 32nd Battalion from 1916 until he later returned in 1919.

During the war he suffered from dental issues and was, for a time, detached to the Light Trench Mortar Battery. On the night of 25/26th September 1917 he absented himself from his battery and turned up a couple of weeks later. He was found guilty of desertion and sentenced to five year penal servitude but, as was the custom, the sentence was suspended and he returned to active duty.

He returned to Australia in 1919. It is unknown where he lived the rest of his life, but we do know that he later died on the 14th of August 1943.
