1916 Memerambi Roll of Honour

An article in the Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser Friday 28 April 1916 about the opening of the Memerambi Rifle Club also included the unveiling of the Memerambi Roll of Honour by Mrs Ellwood. The Roll of Honour was in a glassed frame so was probably similar to the pictorial memorial at Wooroolin Memorial Hall. I wonder what happened to it! There are 28 names listed in the newspaper article. I have found 21 so yet a further 7 to go. Not easy when first names given are as known not birth name.

Page 32 of Memerambi Moments by Dr Judith Grimes states: Many young men from Memerambi enlisted for overseas duty. As each left, the town gathered, first to fete them as heroes for enlisting and then to bid them farewell at the railway station. Some of those who made the supreme sacrifice were Edgar Postle, Luke Coe, Harry Burrow, Jim McLennan and Ernie Hosier.

Wally Jensen – Possibly JENSEN Carl Frederick : Service Number - 6997 : Place of Birth - Kingaroy QLD : Place of Enlistment - Brisbane QLD – Born 1894 at Kingaroy he enlisted in the AIF on in Sep 1915 and embarked with the 15th Battalion from Sydney, on board HMAT A72 Beltana on 25 November 1916. He was one of the many young Qlders’ that suffered from Mumps on arrival in England and was hospitalised at Parkhouse Hospital for almost a month. Whilst serving in France he received a gunshot wound to the right hand and was sent back to Australia. He was discharged 12 Mar 1918. CF Jensen is remembered with a Plaque in Queensland Garden of Remembrance.

Perhaps this is the man known to Memerambi people as Wally Jensen. His family lived at Mondure so it is possible he was working at Memerambi when he enlisted during WW1. CF Jensen is listed on the Wondai Shire Honour Roll WW1 as well as the South Burnett Anzac Heroes website.
